Huambo, Angola’s second-largest urban centre, is positioning itself as a growing destination for business and leisure travel, driven by its strategic location on the Benguela Railway corridor and a mild high-altitude climate that draws domestic visitors from the hotter coast. The city’s post-conflict recovery, aided by HALO Trust’s mine clearance since 1994, has opened up new areas for development and tourism. In 2025, Angola recorded a 30% increase in international tourist arrivals, the highest growth in Africa, and Huambo is set to benefit as attention shifts beyond Luanda. The Global Tourism Forum is organising a dedicated Business Tour to Huambo in July–August 2025, underscoring renewed commercial interest. The vehicle rental market remains fragmented, dominated by small local operators offering a mix of cars, 4x4s, and motorbikes, often on short-term agreements with minimal online presence. Demand peaks during the high season (February–April and July–December) when tourists and business travellers arrive for events and conferences. Cash is the dominant payment method, though mobile money adoption is rising. Operators face challenges such as uneven internet connectivity, limited access to formal payment infrastructure, and the need to manage maintenance for vehicles operating on both paved and unpaved roads. With no large international rental agency presence in the city, local entrepreneurs have room to professionalise and capture growing demand.
